Bruce Almighty Sweet Tooth

Memorial Day 2003 - 12:48 a.m.

I'm Currently Avoiding: Something. I don't know what, but there must be Some Thing.

So now it's been a week since I last updated. Whee. And I thought five days was long. Seven is longer. Just by counting. Merrr...what to say, what to say?

I didn't go to that dinner thing. I pleaded a headache I genuinely had instead. It was good that way. Then I slept and sleep was good.

Hmm. What else? Saturday was again a day to go to town and see a movie. This time we went and saw Bruce Almighty and it was just my mom and me. Mom got the times off of the website and we went to the 1 o'clock showing. We didn't leave until about 20 after 12 so I thought we were going to be late and I sort of speeded more than I usually do as I was driving. So because I was driving over the speed limit more than usual, we got there in 30 minutes instead of the normal 45...only to find out that Mom had the times wrong and that the next showing wasn't at 1, but at 2:30! I felt goofy for having bothered to speed in the first place, but it was kind of nice that we would have been on time if we'd gotten the time right to begin with.

So then we had an hour and a half to kill after getting the tickets. I was sort of vexed, but we wandered around the mall, so it was okay. Mom saw this Fenton glass cat that was pretty cool in addition to being 40% off (Memorial Day Sales can be a Good Thing), so she bought it. And then she dragged me into the tiny, annoying, independent bookstore in the mall and I made her buy me a book. It's sort of a fairy tale-type of a book (one where they take the basic idea/plot or something and then expand it with twists), and I like it well enough so far. I haven't read all of it yet. Happy endings are nice...but I already looked at the end, and it's sort of "well, they might be happy if they get through this next thing that will make an appearance in the next book" sort of ending, which annoys me to no end. But it did at least feel more or less finished, which is better than with some books I can name.

Anyway, back to the movie. Bruce Almighty...I'm not sure how I feel about this one. There were parts of the movie that were sort of "funny at the time", but aren't really memorable now. I do remember when Bruce made Evan babble nonsensically on the 6 o'clock news for about 3 minutes. That was really funny. The rest...enh. Not so memorable. Or even all that funny now. The movie was slightly...off. I mean, they spent practically the whole movie talking about free will and how you couldn't interfere with free will and how that was one of the two rules, and then at the end...in order to get his beloved back (Jennifer Anniston, I think her name was Lisa or something), he has to surrender to God and get hit by a semi. That part just didn't seem right to me. At times, I almost felt like I was watching a not-so-subtle Christian film meant to make everyone a better person or something. It was rather disturbing actually. I don't think I want to see it again.

Mmm...what else? It's Memorial Day technically, and my aunt was supposed to come Sunday to be here for the service and stuff. Instead, she's coming tomorrow morning and it wouldn't surprise me if she left right after the dinner portion was over with. This is how Memorial Day has always worked: Community service at 10 am at the Community Center. Then, everyone drives to the cemetary and there's a graveside service where they shoot at the sky and play taps. After all of that, everyone drives back to the Community Center and we all have a lunch we pay something like $4 a person for. I don't remember, I think that's what it is. The regular food isn't ALL that marvelous, but some of the desserts are yummy. Nooo...I don't have a sweettooth...whatever gave you that idea? *smirk*

So there's that tomorrow...actually, Mom has to go to town early to help set up and have the programs for the service I spent quite awhile copying Saturday evening there for when people arrive, so I have to drive Grandpa and Cora to the service tomorrow. Which means I'll probably be awake in roughly 5 hours. Yay me. Hmm. I think I'll be going now. Ciao.
