Purple Rain Legend

June 30th, 2002 - 3:27 a.m.

I'm Currently Avoiding:

Well, guess one last diary entry before it hits July wouldn't be a bad thing. I was watching Legend earlier. I learned some curious new things about that movie courtesy of the Internet Movie Database. Like the fact that Tim Curry was the big red phallocentric bull/demon thing, which kind of surprised me. More surprises included the fact that one of the weird midget-fairy people played Gwildor in "Masters of the Universe" the movie, not the cartoon. I *knew* I'd heard that voice before. And it turned out that I was right. Oh, the other thing that surprised me was the fact that it was made in 1985. I hadn't thought that that movie was made that long ago. I should really go to bed soon, if not immediately. I have to be awake in something like 5 hours and 15 minutes. Blech. At least I got *almost* an entire day off today. Except for the hour or so I had to wait around for the water delivery. Oh, and of course, on the one day in ages that I could have slept in, when do I wake up? 9:30 in the damn morning. And naturally I couldn't get back to sleep after that either. Damn pager.

I don't really have time to make this long since I have to be awake in a ridiculously short amount of time. I didn't spend my day off very constructively. I picked up a few groceries, deposited my check, took a nap in the afternoon, and did some reading. That's about it. Oh wait, I also updated my website a bit by adding the part that I finished a week or so ago. I seem to get around to updating my webpage roughly once a month. Sometimes a little more often than that, but mostly it's about once a month, give or take. I don't know if this bothers me or not. I guess it's just a thing I do on my own for fun, so I don't particularly care how often I have time to play with it. Besides, sometimes webpages can be extremely frustrating.

The funniest commercial I've seen lately was one that I saw tonight for the Powerpuff Girls movie that comes out July 3rd. I have no intention at all of seeing this movie, but the commercial was great. It had Brak, from the Brak Show and sometimes Space Ghost Coast to Coast, giving a little speech. It went something like this: "Sometimes my friends ask me if I've seen the new Powerpuff Girls movie yet, and I say, 'No, because it doesn't come out for another four days. Stupid!'" And that's the end of the commercial. For some reason every time I've seen that it cracks me up. I don't know if it's the inflection or the fact that it's so simple and short or what, but I just find it hilarous. It's probably because I am Easily Amused. Oh yes, Easily Amused, but a Cynic and Depressing at the same time. I never said I was consistant or understandable.

One more topic of discussion and then I'm going to bed...or at least I'm going to turn off the computer and go read in bed. Close enough to the same thing, actually. However, I must warn you, this topic is a doozy. Ha. And that topic is...PURPLE RAIN!~ (I didn't mean to put the ~ in there, it was an accident, but after it was there, I liked the look of it and so I've chosen to leave it there. And if you don't like it then you can just go tilde!) For some reason, I just can't escape the movie Purple Rain today. It was on VH1 earlier, and now it's on UPN, which apparently has gone through some weird change of programming in the wee hours of Sunday morning and has proclaimed itself the "African Heritage Network". I really haven't the slightest idea how exactly Purple Rain comes in as part of African Heritage anything. But this movie is really up there on the chart of Incomprehensible and Strange. Maybe I'm being too harsh on it and it really makes perfect sense if you watch it from beginning to end (something I don't believe I've ever done), but I keep seeing bits and pieces of it and it doesn't make a lick of sense to me. There are only a few reasons to like Purple Rain and they all have to do with the music and not with anything conventional like the plot or character development or anything. "Jungle Love" is good, "When Doves Cry" is good, and "Purple Rain" is good, but the dialogue is pitiful, the plot is confusing, and the characters are 1-dimensional and obvious. And for some reason I find it highly amusing that they can play the song Purple Rain absolutely perfectly near the end of the movie after never ever practicing it. Prince's character was so adamently against even listening to Lisa & Wendy's song that I didn't even ever see him *listen* to the song, let alone distribute it to the other people in the band so they could practice it. Anyway, that's my main problem with this movie, but then again, there are so many plot holes and odd occurances in this movie that there's most likely an infinite number of problems one could have with it.

So that's it for now. More later, or something.
