The Random Text Says: "" Nothing Special June 13th, 2001 - 5:46 a.m. I'm Currently Avoiding:I really must stop this habit of early-morning updates. Either that or I need to actually sleep at night. One or the other...possibly both. Anyway, today, June 13 is ........ National Juggling Day and Kitchen Klutzes America Day (hmm...Juggling + Klutzes = really bad idea + broken items + personal injury. Yeah, that was a *really* good combination.) This is basically going to be a non-diary entry. Or maybe it'll just be a short one. I don't know. I only have two things I want to babble about anyway. I just finished reading a book where they used the word "silkie" throughout the entire book instead of "selkie." And although I would swear that the correct way to spell it is selkie, I just had to go and check, didn't I? And now, I can't find anything to tell me which way is right, one way or the other. Does anyone know? This is really starting to hurt my head. Or can it be spelled both ways? Is it like the difference between faery and fairy and one's just an older spelling? Ahhh!!!!!!! Speaking of words.. vulpine (adj. pine-away) 1 : of, relating to, or resembling a fox 2 : foxy, crafty In _Walden_ (1854), Henry David Thoreau described foxes crying out "raggedly and demoniacally" as they hunted through the winter forest, and he wrote, "Sometimes one came near to my window, attracted by my light, barked a vulpine curse at me, and then retreated." Thoreau's was far from the first use of vulpine; English writers have been applying that adjective to the foxlike or crafty since at least 1628, and the Latin parent of our term, vulpinus (from the noun vulpes, meaning fox), was around long before that. Yes, I know, that was a shoddy segue, but I don't care. Oh yeah, the other thing is related to that previous weather thing. There apparently was a big storm in another part of the state last night. The weathermen took it *really* seriously. So seriously, in fact, that they scrapped all the evening programming on both ABC & CBS in favor of constant live weather updates. I bet the weathermen were having a blast. It's probably the only time in a long time that they've gotten to talk for so long about their favorite subject...Doppler 2000! Ha. No, they talked about the "severity of the weather" or something like that. I don't know, it's not like I was paying attention...it wasn't anywhere near me after all. The weather wasn't even stormy then. It is now though. Maybe I should get off the computer before lightning hits the house and fries my computer. There are no such things as surge protectors. Or rather, there are, I just don't own any. Besides, it's late (or early) enough as it is. Feeling lucky? Choose an Entry At RANDOM! Yes. Random.
